Pilates is a series of nonimpact exercises designed to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and inner awareness. Pilates puts a focus on breath, alignment, and building a stronger core. The class is taught to encourage movement with precision, control, and concentration.
Many people of different levels of fitness can feel physical improvements from Pilates. The benefits of Pilates build over time. Common benefits include improvements in range of motion, flexibility, circulation, posture, and abdominal strength. Some people also experience a decrease in back, neck, and joint pain. Similar to yoga, a consistent Pilates practice can also improve body awareness, which can lead to increased stability and balance in every day activities.
Pilates can be done either on a mat or with a specific machine in some gyms. JRWS is offering free Mat Pilates classes beginning this week. You can expect movements such as The Hundred, Rolling Like a Ball, the Side Kick Series, and Saw.
Phyllis Bertram will be teaching a weekly FREE Pilates class at JRWS in Palomar beginning October 4. The class will begin at 4pm each Sunday. No previous experience with Pilates is needed. Just bring your own yoga or pilates mat and be ready for a great stretch and strength workout.
