We are quickly approaching the time to start training for fall races. Some runners enjoy solo running, but running groups can be beneficial to lots of us. Meeting with a regular group of people provides encouragement, support, and accountability. Finding someone with similar goals and motivations can make a running season more enjoyable. There are a variety of running groups that meet on Saturday mornings that may provide what you are looking for.
These groups are currently meeting as of July 2015. Please visit the pages linked to obtain the most up-to-date information before showing up for a run.
John’s Striders is a free running and walking training group. There’s a heavy emphasis on camaraderie and having fun while also gaining a higher level of fitness. Leader Ernie Peel has completed 17 marathons since the age of 50 and has mentored many beginning and experienced distance runners. The group rotates locations of Saturday runs. You can find more information on the Striders on their facebook page.
Bluegrass Runners is a non-profit organization based in Lexington devoted to promoting fitness, fellowship, and fun for runners of all ages and abilities. You can find more about the Bluegrass Runners on their website and follow their run schedule on facebook.
West Sixth Half Marathon Training Team
As an extension of their Tuesday evening run club, West Sixth Brewery also supports local runners on Saturday mornings. This round of training for the Iron Horse Half Marathon starts on July 19 and the first group run will be Saturday, July 25. The group meets at the brewery at 8am each Saturday. The training plan is posted on the facebook page and they provide routes each week there as well. Attend half of the training runs (either Tuesdays or Saturdays) and earn a West Sixth Training Team tshirt for the goal race. The brewery also holds a party after the goal race for team members.
Todd’s Road Stumblers
The Todds Road Stumblers are an informal group of runners who meet each Saturday morning to run and enjoy each others company. Club members meet in an old farmhouse at Pine Grove, about 6 miles east of Lexington, just east of the Clark County line, at the intersection of Todd’s Road (1927) and Comb’s Ferry Road (1923).
Starting time for the weekly runs is 7 AM. Runners can choose to do 6, 9, 12, 15, and 21 miles. All runners completing the 6 mile course for the first time receive a Todds Road Stumblers t-shirt. More information available on their website and facebook page.
