Reforest the Bluegrass

25 years of creating a greener lexington

As a business that serves the local running community, we at John’s Run/Walk Shop know how important it is to protect the ground we run on and the air we breathe. That’s why we’re proud to organize the Reforest 5K and support the efforts of Reforest the Bluegrass. Every spring, volunteers of all ages get together for a fun day of tree-planting that leaves a lasting positive imprint on our Commonwealth.

This tradition began in 1999 as a group of passionate environmentalists and community leaders planted thousands of seedlings in the then-new Coldstream Park off Newtown Pike. The following year, Reforest the Bluegrass took off in a big way, as 45,000 seedlings took root in Masterson Station Park during the 2000 and 2001 events.

Since then Reforest the Bluegrass has made Lexington greener through planting events at sites including Liberty Park, Veterans Park, Shillito Park, Jacobson Park and more.

Reforest the Bluegrass accomplishments:

  • More than 200 acres of floodplains restored

  • More than 18,000 volunteers involved

  • More than 215,000 tree seedlings planted

  • Around 65% first-year survival rates

  • Fewer than $175,000 of local government funds spent

  • More than $130,000 private funds raised

  • If plantings had been contracted out, they would have cost $1.2 million.

Not only does this event preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Bluegrass region, but it also serves as an educational event. Exhibitors bring interactive displays and games that focus on environmental issues such as water quality and trees’ role in improving our air and providing habitat for wildlife.

Those who can’t attend Reforest the Bluegrass can take part in Reforest at Home, which provides free tree seedlings for Fayette County residents to plant in their own yards. In 2023, Live Green Lexington distributed 1,433 seedlings to 417 participating households.

Since its inception, Reforest the Bluegrass has left an indelible mark on the landscape of Lexington. The event's impact is evident in the increasing green cover, improved air quality, and enhanced biodiversity in the region. The community's active involvement has not only resulted in the planting of thousands of trees but has also fostered a sense of pride and ownership among residents.

We encourage you to learn more and take part in Reforest the Bluegrass as well as to support the event by running or walking in this year’s Reforest 5K on March 23.
